Books on Crisis and Controversial Issues Management

Crisis Management for Managers and Executives by Robert Heath

Subtitled Business crises - the definitive handbook to reduction, readiness, response and recovery, this book integrates research with the author's personal insight to develop an effective framework for managing risks rather than waiting for a crisis to occur. It includes a detailed discussion of warning systems, media and communications, image and bouncing back after a crisis. As the introduction says: this may be the most important book you ever read.

If your Crisis Management Team hasn't yet held one of my Smoldering Crises Seminars, you should certainly click on the link to read more about this book!

Crisis Management for Corporate Self-defense - by Steve Albrecht

Subtitled How to protect your organisation in a crisis and How to stop a crisis before it starts, this inexpensive book is packed with real-life examples and practical advice. Albrecht groups crises into those revolving around products, image and employees and identifies an array of self-defense tools to counter them. Clear, concise and to-the-point, this is a book which your Crisis Management Team really should have on the bookshelf. Click on the link to read more about this book.

'Thanks for the information on "Crisis Management for Corporate Self-defense" by Steve Albrecht. I've just received this book via amazon.com, and it's excellent. Regards, Michael Tunnecliffe'

Managing Outside Pressure by Winter and Steger

Subtitled Strategies for Preventing Corporate Disasters, this book includes checklists to help you identify, understand and forecast those external issues which pose maximum threat to a company. One of the best discussions of the issue identification I've seen.

Rules for Radicals by Saul Alinsky

This classic handbook for bringing about social change, subtitled A Pragmatic Primer for Realistic Radicals, was first published in 1971 and is still in print. If you find predicting the actions of activists and protesters difficult, this book is essential reading.

Fast Thinking: Crisis by Ros Jay

A pocket sized booklet to help you prioritise, plan and recover when you need to deliver bad news, manage tough situations or limit the damage.

Crisis Management - What to do when the Unthinkable Happens by Michael Regester

A quick read with some good advice.

The Essential Guide to Managing Corporate Crises - A Step by Step Handbook for Surviving Major Catastrophes by Ian Mitroff, Christine Pearson and Katharine Harrington

Looks at what to do during a crisis followed by what to do before and after a crisis using a systems approach. Includes software incorporating a decision checklist.

Crisis Management - A Diagnostic Guide for Improving Your Organisation's Crisis-Preparedness by Ian Mitroff and Christine Pearson

A systematic framework for assessing your organisation's crisis preparedness with some suggestions as to how to respond during a crisis.

Smart Thinking for Crazy Times - The art of solving the right problems by Ian Mitroff

In this interesting book Mitroff, who has written extensively on crisis management, argues that organisations and even whole societies regularly choose the wrong problem to solve. They also approach problems from too narrow a perspective, frame them incorrectly, and identify the wrong stakeholders. Packed with examples drawn from his crisis management experiences it represents an original contribution to the process of managing crises and controversy.

Managing Crises Before They Happen by Ian Mitroff with Gus Anagnos

Another valuable contribution to crisis literature from Mitroff who begins with the disturbing statement that: 'Since 1900, twenty-eight "major" industrial accidents have occurred worldwide, with "major" meaning fifty or more deaths. The most disturbing part of this statistic is that half of the twenty-eight have occurred in the past fifteen or so years.' Mitroff believes that crises have become an inevitable and permanent part of modern society and every organisation now needs to ensure they have the skills to manage crises.

Issues Management in Strategic Planning by William L Renfro

An exceptionally valuable treatment of controversial issues, including how they develop, how the organisation can detect potential issues early enough to influence their outcome and how to manage them.

Industry Risk Communication Manual by BJ Hance, Caron Chess and Peter Sandman

One of the classics of risk communication, packed full of guidelines and practical checklists drawn from extensive interviews with industry practitioners. Invaluable.

Risk Issues and Crisis Management - A Casebook of Best Practice by Michael Regester and Judy Larkin

Based on the premise that 'An issue ignored is a crisis ensured' this book follows the lifecycle of issues in part one and crises in part two, using numerous examples and case studies to illustrate key points.

Risk Communication - A Handbook for Communicating Environmental, Safety and Health Risks by Regina Lundgren and Andrea McMakin

Communicating risk related information to non-technical audiences without compromising meaning, or provoking panic, mistrust or hostility, can be a major challenge. This comprehensive handbook includes numerous checklists, flowcharts and guidelines offering practical assistance.

Everyone Can Win - How to Resolve Conflict by Helena Cornelius and Shoshana Faire

This book is a timeless classic which has been reprinted numerous times since it was first published. Its focus is on practical tools for resolving conflict ranging from situations which just make you feel uncomfortable through to difficult and testing situations or major confrontations. The ideas presented can be applied to stakeholder negotiations and in workplace relationships, as well as in family and social conflict situations.

Risky Practices - A counsellor's guide to risk management in private practice by Nigel McBride and Michael Tunnecliffe.

Discusses legal, ethical and risk issues facing counselling psychologists in Australia and New Zealand. Includes a comprehensive discussion of common issues which arise in private practice.
